The Problem

Students Are Told to Get Experience. Almost No One Explains How.

Classroom knowledge is not enough. Employers and graduate programs look for evidence — real projects, real data, real teamwork, real results. Most students graduate without any of it.

At the same time, the process this program studies is itself poorly documented. Institutional data on international students typically stops at graduation. Employer- side hiring behavior toward international graduates is rarely studied and even more rarely published. Students navigate the transition on anecdote.

The Research Mentorship Program addresses both problems at once. Fellows produce the evidence base that does not currently exist, and in doing so build the portfolio that employers and graduate programs actually ask to see.

You do not need a technical background. Our research teams need analysts, writers, interviewers, coordinators, and bilingual researchers. Whatever your major, there is a real role here, and a mentor to help you grow into it.

You Will Not Be Shadowing. You Will Be Doing the Work.

All three published briefs draw on original survey data collected from 182 student participants between April and May 2026. All VSC research is published free of charge to students, universities, and the public.

How It Works

Four Phases, Two Tracks

The program runs on a cohort basis. You choose a 6-month or a 12-month track when you apply. Both tracks begin with the same foundation and diverge at Phase 4.

PHASE 01
Weeks 1-4

Phase 1 — Research Foundations

Orientation, mentor matching, and training in research methods, research ethics, data handling, and VSC's research protocols. You complete a baseline skills assessment and are placed on a research track team.

Months 2–4

Phase 2 — First Research Cycle

Your team takes on an eight-week supervised project from the VSC project library: outreach, structured interviews, survey administration, data organization, and analysis, ending with a written deliverable and a formal revision round with your mentor.

Phase 3 — Flagship Research Contribution

You move from guided projects to VSC's flagship research programs, working alongside our research staff. Six-month fellows close this phase with a capstone presentation, a completed portfolio, and a Program Certificate.

Phase 4 — Leadership and Publication Capstone

Senior fellows lead. You may serve as peer lead for an incoming cohort, mentor new fellows, pursue contributor credit on VSC publications, present at our annual research showcase, and complete an individual capstone project of your own design under faculty-level review.

Every Study Needs More Than Analysts.

Research teams are built from complementary roles. You are matched to a role during Phase 1 based on your background, your interests, and your baseline skills assessment. Several of these roles require no quantitative background at all.

Quantitative Track

Research Data Analyst

Cleans, structures, and analyzes survey and secondary datasets; produces the quantitative findings that anchor each study.

GOOD FIT IF:

you have coursework in statistics, economics, data science, or any quantitative method.

Qualitative Fieldwork

Field Researcher

Recruits participants, conducts structured and semi-structured interviews, and maintains field notes under protocol.

GOOD FIT IF:

you are comfortable talking to people and listening carefully.

Writing & Synthesis

Research Writer

Drafts report sections, translates findings into clear prose, and manages revision cycles with the supervising researcher.

GOOD FIT IF:

you write well in any discipline.

Bilingual / Translation

Bilingual Research Associate

Conducts interviews and reviews source material in both English and Chinese; ensures meaning is preserved across languages.

GOOD FIT IF:

Good fit if you work fluently in both languages.

Operations & Outreach

Research Program Coordinator

Manages study logistics, participant scheduling, institutional outreach, and data collection timelines.

Dr. Franks directs VSC's research agenda and provides methodological supervision across all six research areas. She is an international educator with seventeen years of professional experience, including eleven years leading academic programs in China, and is the author of VSC's three published research briefs.

Eligibility

Every Major. Every Level.

We accept candidates who bring analytical curiosity, clear communication skills, and a willingness to commit to rigorous empirical work.

What We Look For

Current enrollment as an undergraduate, master's, or doctoral student at a U.S. institution, or graduation within the past twelve months

Demonstrated analytical or communication capability through coursework, thesis work, professional experience, or equivalent

Capacity to commit 5 to 8 hours per week for the full length of the chosen track

Genuine interest in the research questions, not only in the credential

Open to all majors: STEM, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business & Communications.

Language Asset

Bilingual Research Roles

Working proficiency in both English and Chinese is required for the Bilingual Research Associate role and is an asset in field research roles. It is not required for the program overall.

Methodology Training included

Bilingual Research Roles

Prior formal research experience is helpful but not required. Methods training is Phase 1 of the program, ensuring every fellow builds a foundation in data handling and ethics.

How We Work

Research Standards

All VSC research is conducted under written protocol. Fellows complete research ethics training in Phase 1 before beginning any fieldwork.

Informed consent

All human-subject participation is voluntary and consented in writing.

Anonymization

Individual respondents and employer informants are not identifiable in any published output.

Data governance

Research data is stored under access control and retained according to VSC's written data management policy.

Authorship

Authorship and contributor credit are based on contribution. Fellows who meet authorship criteria appear as named contributors on published work.

Open access

All VSC publications are freely available. No paywall, no institutional subscription, no fee to students or universities.

Send a CV, a statement of research interest of approximately 500 words, and one writing sample.

Accepted fellows are assigned a research area, a role, and a mentor, and begin at the start of the next cohort.
